Swim with Gentle Stingrays at Stingray City
Decades ago, local fishermen would clean their fish on a shallow sandbar near Grand Cayman Island. Stingrays would gather nearby to feast on the conch guts and fish gills left by the fishermen. The stingrays eventually began to associate the sound of the fishing boats with food, and would come to the sandbar to eat. In the 1980’s, divers also began to feed the stingrays squid as they would swim with them in the waters. This sandbar was soon named “Stingray City” as more than fifty southern stingrays congregate here daily. Stingray City Cayman Islands organizes daily opportunities to swim with and feed these gentle, friendly stingrays!
Where: Grand Cayman Island
Age: There are no age restrictions, though it is recommended that your child be old enough to understand that the stingrays are not toys and require gentle contact.
Tour Info: A twenty minute boat trip will bring you from port to Stingray City. When you arrive, you’ll see stingrays gliding through the clear, blue waters. Stingray City Cayman Islands’ professionally trained staff will instruct you in safe feeding techniques for the stingrays. The stingrays are friendly, but you’ll be instructed to avoid contact of any kind with the lancer, located in the mid tail, to prevent skin cuts and punctures. You’ll then get into the shallow waters (about 3-5 feet deep) holding a piece of squid of small fish. The stingrays will approach you, eager for their snack!
The tour to Stingray City will also be combined with another snorkeling stop or trip to a turtle farm. About 20-30 minutes will be spent at Stingray City. Tours for adults range from $60-$70, and tours for children (ages 4-12) range from $30-$40. Children under 4 are free. This price includes snorkel gear and food for the stingrays. A photographer will be present during your dive, and you can purchase pictures when you are back at port.
